WE ARE SCULPTORS OF VISUAL PERCEPTIONS

The art of lighting design is rooted in the understanding of light as a revealer of form. The science of lighting design is devoted to examining how light and architecture interact to create visual perceptions in the mind of the observer.

The lighting designer aspires to balance art and science, to reveal the architecture sympathetically, to create an appropriate atmosphere and to properly illuminate tasks and activities within the space. Hefferan Partnership Lighting Design has been striking that delicate balance for more than 20 years, with much of that experience focused on museum and exhibit design. Founding partner Steven Hefferan launched his career at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he was the resident lighting designer from 1987 to 1990.

Many of our installations have been for such world-renowned institutions as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Field Museum, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Winterthur Museum and Gardens. Each of these challenging projects demonstrates our ability to balance the visual needs of the patron with the preservation criteria of the collections while providing solutions that pass the test of time.

The limited number of engagements we take means that principals will play an active role in all aspects of a project. If necessary, we can also draw upon the expertise of a select group of outside specialists. This range of talent creates a firm that excels at a variety of lighting disciplines and design challenges.
